Maintenance Tips

Keep your Plumbing in Great Shape with Maintenance!

Any prevention effort helps keep your home’s plumbing in tip-top condition and saves you the cost of repairs in the long run.

Faucets and Sinks
  • The smallest of drips can amount to thousands of gallons of wasted water a day! Regularly check under your sinks for dampness or small leaks. Repair leaking faucets to save on water costs as well as keep your fixtures and pipes free from water damage.
  • Remove and clean your faucet aerators once a year to ensure a smooth flow of water.
  • Keep the overflow holes on bathtubs and vanities clear and open to prevent water damage to floors and ceilings.
Water Heater
  • If you choose to repair your water heater yourself, first read your owner's manual. Shut off the gas and power before doing any maintenance work.
  • Drain about a gallon of water from the tank once every three months. This helps remove the sediment build-up at the bottom of the heater, which can hinder performance.
  • Inspect your water heater burner occasionally. If you notice a yellow flame or soot, contact a professional for help.
  • Have your water heater inspected by a service technician at least once every two years. They will check for signs of leakage and corrosion.
Toilets
  • Inspect your toilet for leaks at least once a year. A simple standard test involves inserting a small amount of red food coloring in the tank then checking the toilet bowl a few hours later. Red color in the bowl tells you water is leaking from the tank into the bowl, and you should replace the talk ball inside the tank.
Clogs
  • Fitting tubs and shower drains with a strainer helps grab hold of soap chips and hair and prevent clogs. Clean the strainer frequently.
  • Avoid rinsing cooking oils or fats down your kitchen sink. Liquid fats create clogs when they solidify in the cold pipes, this creating clogs.
  • Steer clear of using caustic liquid drain openers on a fully clogged drain. They get trapped and can damage your pipes. Contact a professional if you are unable to clear the drain yourself.
Garbage Disposal
Your garbage disposal can have a longer life if you:
  • Use plenty of cold water when running it.
  • Avoid overloading it.
  • Don't dispose of things like bones, corn husks, coffee grinds, egg shells, potato skins or rice!
  • Never use a caustic drain opener product.
